Information on Green card / EU cover
March 20, 2019
We are starting to receive increasing amounts of calls with regards to Green card/EU cover after Brexit (whenever it is completed!) and would like to advise all customers on what to do/expect in the not too distant future!
As it currently stands we are still a part of the EU, which means within the guidelines of your policy documents you can travel to countries stated in the documents without a Green card.
The imminent no-deal Brexit on the 29th March would require UK Insurers to issue Green Cards to policyholders. This will be done so electronically, printed prior to your departure and carried throughout your journey.
Whilst the date to leave the EU is currently set for 29th March we also understand that we may need to issue green cards before this date to customers who intend to travel prior to that date and return to the UK afterwards.
We are also aware with the changes detailed above; insurers will be amending their policy wordings. Document sections regarding Foreign Use cover will be updated and emailed by us to you upon completion by the insurer.
Further to the above you may have heard that plans are underway to extend the negotiation period for Brexit and should this be agreed, the date referred to above will change.
Should you intend to drive your vehicle within the EU, please call us at least 2 weeks prior to your departure to receive your Green Card from us. Please be aware some insurers are charging a small fee for this.
If you do attempt to drive in the EU without a Green Card, you may be accused of driving without insurance and could be subject to a fine, having your vehicle seized or prosecution.
